Mission

Although seemingly simple, the science of test interpretation is complex and generally not taught well.

We share interactive tools including a video to learn about testing, calculators with real testing data, and a “playground” to experiment with test variables.

These tools explain terms often used for testing such as pretest probability, sensitivity, specificity, Bayesian updating and predictive values.

DANIEL MORGAN, MD MS

Dan is an infectious disease doctor and professor of epidemiology & public health at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and Chief of Epidemiology at the Baltimore VA.

His research focusing on physician understanding of testing and treatment was recognized with an NIH New Innovator award.


DEBORAH KORENSTEIN, MD

Debbie is an internal medicine specialist with many years of clinical experience as a primary care physician and academic experience as a researcher and educator of physicians in training. 

Her work at Memorial Sloan Kettering focuses on the value of care for patients with cancer, seeking to minimize unnecessary and potentially harmful tests and treatments and ensure patients receive the helpful care they really need.


LISA PINELES, MA

Lisa is an epidemiologist and Program Director at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She currently manages a variety of projects funded by the VA, CDC, NIH, and AHRQ in the fields of medical overuse, hospital epidemiology, and antibiotic resistance. Before joining the University, she spent six years working as a legislative assistant in the U.S. House of Representatives on a wide variety of public policy issues. She received her M.A. in Experimental Psychology from Towson University with a thesis on health behavior and self-medication. 


DEBORAH STEVENS, LMSW, MPH, CPRP

Debbie is a research coordinator at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Before joining the team she was a psychotherapist for individuals and families and spent many years working in community-based mental health.


Partners

RENÉE WALKER & BETH SHIRRELL

Renée and Beth have experience working in all aspects of communication design. Renée is a founding partner of the design studio Gold Collective. Both she and Beth are Assistant Professors of Graphic Design at Thomas Jefferson University. The program approaches communication design, focusing on a collaborative human-centered research process, a human approach to the communication of information and data visualization. It encourages the experimental use of tools and technology.


NICHOLAS WILKINS

Nick is a Washington, DC-based software engineer with a passion for solving problems and creating. He has experience in civic tech as well as the game industry.


MIKE LEGRAND

Mike is a senior programmer with 15 years of game industry experience working in C++, C#, JS, and Java. His primary focus is on game creation tools and user experience. In addition to his development work, Mike is the co-founder of Code in the Schools, a non-profit organization that brings high-quality programming classes to Baltimore City youth.
