Mission

Although seemingly simple, the science of test interpretation is complex and generally not taught well.

We share interactive tools including a video to learn about testing, calculators with real testing data, and a “playground” to experiment with test variables.

These tools explain terms often used for testing such as pretest probability, sensitivity, specificity, Bayesian updating and predictive values.

Dan is an infectious disease doctor and professor of epidemiology & public health at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and Chief of Epidemiology at the Baltimore VA.





Debbie is an internal medicine specialist with many years of clinical experience as a primary care physician and academic experience as a researcher and educator of physicians in training.

Lisa is an epidemiologist and Program Director at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Debbie is a research coordinator at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

  • His research focusing on physician understanding of testing and treatment was recognized with an NIH New Innovator award.

  • Her work at Memorial Sloan Kettering focuses on the value of care for patients with cancer, seeking to minimize unnecessary and potentially harmful tests and treatments and ensure patients receive the helpful care they really need.

  • She currently manages a variety of projects funded by the VA, CDC, NIH, and AHRQ in the fields of medical overuse, hospital epidemiology, and antibiotic resistance. Before joining the University, she spent six years working as a legislative assistant in the U.S. House of Representatives on a wide variety of public policy issues. She received her M.A. in Experimental Psychology from Towson University with a thesis on health behavior and self-medication.

  • Before joining the team she was a psychotherapist for individuals and families and spent many years working in community-based mental health.
